“Junior Devotion”: April 19, 2020 The Second Sunday of Easter

“Happy Earth Day!”

What do you think of our spring days so far?  Not much?  Me neither.  It seems a little cold and gloomy.  I’d really like it if the wind wasn’t blowing hard and the sun made the air warmer.  I have an idea that if we wait (because what choice do we have?) the days will be warmer pretty soon.

Most of us would like to go outdoors and play around the back yard or walk around a park, and also do something fun and interesting.  Here are a couple of ideas: we could look carefully to see what plants are beginning to grow out of the ground (in my yard there are hostas, peonies, roses, hen and chickens (crazy name, isn’t it?) and even rhubarb!  Oh, and a few dandelions.  We could also look around at the birds in the yard or park, and see how many kinds there are.  If you have a book about birds, you can learn their names and some things about them.

This week, we all get to celebrate a special day.  Wednesday is “Earth Day,” which is a day to be thankful for the beautiful world we live in, learn more about our environment, and perhaps do something that is good for the earth.  As we learn and understand more about how plants, animals, birds, and fish live and grow, we’ll also understand what we can do to make sure they have healthy places to live.  And you know what?  If all these creatures have healthy places, we will, too!

The first book of the Bible is the book of Genesis, and we can read the whole story of how God created the heavens and the earth, the oceans and the land, the moon, the stars and all the planets.  As God created everything he looked at it, and saw that it was good.  It sounds like God was glad to see the beautiful place the earth became.

Earth Day and being thankful to God for this wonderful creation go together very well.  Now that your house is also your school, I have a suggestion for some Earth Day activities at home. As I was searching for some information, I Googled “Earth Day 2020” on my computer and found a wonderful website!  It’s titled “Earth Day At Home with NASA” and is filled with activities for kids of all ages.  I was amazed at all the things to do — games, puzzles, crafts, and learning activities of all kinds are in their “tool kit.”  There was a huge variety, and  best of all, it’s not just for one day.  I plan to look at a lot more and hope to do some activities with my granddaughter when we can be together again.  Please let me know how you like this website and if you’ve done some activities.  You or your parent can comment on Facebook or e mail me at mlr5258@msn.com.  I’d love to hear from you!

Your St. Andrew Friend,

Mary Rogers

P.S.: If you have friends or classmates who would like to read the Junior Devotion or  share these Earth Day activities, you’re welcome to send this along to them.
